As we embark upon 2016 I think that it is quite common to spend some time thinking about goals for the future and achievements from the past. Unfortunately, I also think that it is common to spend a good amount of time being critical of what we may or not have accomplished. I say we do away with the latter! For most people living with epilepsy each day is a bit more complicated then it may be for someone not living with epilepsy. That is not to say that I have not met a number of patients for whom epilepsy is almost an after thought –but for them it took time to get to that point. For some of our other patients it has not been that easy- yet they still manage to impress me and with their ability to stay positive and focused on living a full life! There are so many examples of strength, resilience, kindness and compassion that I have seen both within our patients and also within the advocates in the community at large. Just a simple search of epilepsy blogs will link you to many of these adults and children who have found a way to take EPIELPSY and turn it into something positive and great!
So I am going to propose that for this year we don’t spend too much time thinking of what we can do or what we could have done but rather spend our time thinking about what we are doing! I hope that means that you will take this as a call for action to create your own mission to educate or advocate on behalf of yourself and the larger community. It does not have to be a huge project-it may not even be a public project but I hope you can find something that can be added to the positive examples already in the community!
Happy 2016!
